Moving in

August 24, 2007

I’m sitting in my desk chair in my dorm room listening to all the activity outside my open window. The weather is absolutely beautiful today, maybe 75 degrees with at least a little sunshine, and its fun to listen to all the people running back and forth in the open space between the buildings.

Moving in went really well yesterday. We were here by 10:45 and dad was gone by 4:00 and all of the suitcases with him. I even have extra drawer space, though I’m sure that won’t last too long.
My roomate seems nice. She was already here when I got here because she took summer classes, so she brought the microwave and TV and found a couch she bought for $10. The room is small, but I knew that when I requested this dorm, and being a 5 minute walk from all of my classes and having the best food on campus just outside my door makes it worth it. I’ve already met some people on my floor, I’m going to the welcoming celebrations with them tonight which are starting soon. I’d better get ready.
I love it here.

Summer’s Over

August 23, 2007

Where did the summer go? Wasn’t I just shopping for graduation party decorations with Beth, or packing for Spain?
Kathleen, one of my friends from Burke orchestra, came over for a minute today to drop off my graduation present. It was good to see her, we haven’t seen each other since senior honors night and she is one friend I hope to keep from high school.
I spent some time with Dad tonight, and later everyone was on Ventrilo for a while. It was a good last night at home.

And now I can’t sleep because I’m so excited. (Wow that sounds childish.) Twelve hours from now I will be moved into my dormroom. I’m packed, I think I have everything I’ll need and then some, and most of it is sitting in suitcases on my bedroom floor. I’ve talked to my roomate once and gotten a couple of messages from her, she seems fun and I’m anxious to finally meet her.
But I think I’m going to go enjoy my last night in my own room.
Only a few hours o go.

Catching up

August 22, 2007

I can not believe how long it has been since I wrote here. I can’t even justify it by saying that nothing has happened, because plenty has happened that is at least semi noteworthy. Shall we just chalk it up to laziness?

I got home in earlyJuly and pretty much slept for the next two weeks. I dog-sat for Dad’s friend for a week and read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows with my friends on Ventrilo. Then I went to Lincoln for the better part of a week to help with their summer program for younger kids called Project Indipendence. That was a rewarding experience and sometimes I think I learned more than the kids I was teaching.
Then I went to Baltimore for the NFB Youth Slam. It was an interesting week, I learned a lot and most of the classes were excelent, but I think the general consensis was that we would have liked more freedom. Still, it was fun to march through the streets of Baltimore with all those blind kids shouting our chants. I met some interesting people there, too. Some of them are becoming friends, and some of them definitely aren’t, but that’s the nature of big gatherings.

And now I am home, have been for a couple of weeks. I move into my dorm in a little over 24 hours, and I keep wondering where my summer has gone. I’ve spent most of the last couple weeks packing and planning what to pack, getting advice from all of my friends who have done this before. Tomorrow, today actually, I’m going to finish packing my clothes and go over my checklists one more time.
Now that some of the most important things in my life are back in order I’m letting myself get excited again. I’m ready to make this move, or at the very least I’m ready to be done worrying about making this move. I can’t wait to start my classes, especially Spanish. There are things I will miss about home, but it all looks like one big adventure from this side and I’m ready for the excitement. Besides, I’ve been told that the first week of college is the best and I want to see if I agree.

Tick tock, tick tock.
